What’s positive about negative keywords?

First of all, what the heck are negative keywords? Are they keywords spelt backwards or maybe just loss making keywords? No; negative keywords prevent your ads from showing when you don't want them to.

The vast majority of people who try setting up and managing their own pay per click advertising campaign rarely consider employing negative keywords. But a Google advertising professional will utilise scores, if not hundreds, of them in every campaign.

For example, if you were selling Star Wars toys, and used the keyword “star wars”, you might not want your ads to show for people searching for “star wars, the movie”. So you would add the negative keyword “movie”.

Irrelevant displays of your ads will reduce your “click through rate”, which reduces your “Quality Score”, making you either pay more for the same position or pay the same price but for a lower position. Either way this is a negative experience, and all because you didn’t use negative keywords.

See our point? There’s something positive in negative keywords for sure.
